About TRS Photos

Tom R. Smedes is a freelance photographer living in Sparks, Nevada.  He has been photographing professionally since the 1980s. Tom shoots the University of Nevada sports for the AP and the Reno Gazette Journal. His action photography has been featured in newspapers across the country and on websites including Sports Illustrated’s SI.com, ESPN.com and many others.  Tom studied under Reno photography ledgend Don Dondero and worked with local photo icons Marilyn Newton and Tim Dunn. He shoots professional baseball, golf, soccer, basketball and other Nevada sports. Tom shoots action sports and editorial portraits as well as special events, news and other assignment work.  Tom is a member of the National Press Photographers Association. In 1983 Tom founded Softball West Magazine and published and photographed for the magazine for 29 years, winning national awards for its action photography.  In 2005 Tom began shooting photos for the Reno Gazette Journal and other Gannett papers and websites expanding his photography work. In 2016 he began shooting UNR sports and other assignments for the AP.  Tom has also worked as an art director and graphic artist.  At the end of 2012 Tom sold Softball West Magazine and established TRS Photos, a web-based photo company that offers his work in many formats.
